The Merovingian Knot

The Merovingian Necktie Knot

If the Merovingian was the coolest villain in The Matrix movies, appearing in the Matrix Reloaded and the Matrix Revolutions, then we can be friends even if the sequels were not as good.  More importantly, the Merovingian may have drawn the keen eye of many necktie enthusiast by wearing an unusual tie knot and possibly inspiring others to follow suit with new and unusual necktie knots.  Hence the Ediety knot was created and more affectionately known as by it's first appearance worn by the Merovingian.

The only things to know is that to properly tie this tie is the length is going to come up short, so I recommend wearing a vest.  As with any of these unusual tie knots there is a time and place that is appropriate for wearing personality knots.  If you were going to have an interview where creativity is not a main factor, then wearing a traditional Windsor knot would be best.  I love wearing knots like this when I'm networking as it easy stands out from the crowd and gets noticed and is an excuse for other people to start a conversation with you.  Other special occasions such as graduation ceremony, at a wedding but not in the wedding party, in the wedding party only if the bride wants that, any holiday dinners, or less formal business functions.

I found wearing solid color ties to show off the knot the best, but wear striped or patterned ties also work.  Just keep in mind that you are will be wearing a vest, a shirt, tie, and maybe a jacket to keep coordinated when it comes to matching colors and patterns.

Quick Color Tip:  Never wear more than three colors.

Quick Matching Pattern Tip:

  • Use one or two colors to tie your patterns together. Stripes, dots, ikats, and florals that all include, say, moss green will maintain a certain cohesiveness.
  • Vary the scale of your prints.
  • Feel free to go big with prints in small spaces.
  • If you love it, go for it.
